How exact age is counted
An age of "34 years, 2 months, 11 days" is built the same way this site's date calculator breaks down a duration: count whole years from the birthday, then whole months, then the leftover days. The subtlety is that "a month" is elastic. Someone born on the 31st turns "one month old" on the last day of the following month, whether that's the 28th, 30th, or 31st. This clamping rule is the near-universal convention in law and software, and it's the one used here.
Note that age in years is not "days lived ÷ 365". A person born on 1 March 2000 turned 24 on 1 March 2024 having lived 8,766 days — divide by 365 and you'd get 24.02, but divide by 365.25 across a different span and you can land a day short of a birthday that has legally already happened. Legal age always turns on the calendar date, not a day count.
Born on February 29?
Roughly 1 in 1,461 people is born on a leap day and gets a "real" birthday only every four years. For legal purposes, jurisdictions pick a rule: in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, a leap-day baby's birthday in common years falls on 1 March; in New Zealand and Taiwan, it's 28 February. Most US states don't legislate it explicitly, and agencies typically treat 1 March as the day a new age begins. This calculator reports the next occurrence of the actual birth date — so for leap-day births it shows the next 29 February, which can be up to four years away.
Not everyone counts age the same way
The "completed years" system used across most of the world — you are 0 at birth and turn 1 after a full year — is not the only one. Korea used a traditional system in which everyone was 1 at birth and gained a year each New Year, until a 2023 law standardized the international count for most purposes. In parts of East Asia, a similar "nominal age" survives in fortune-telling and traditional contexts. Horse racing goes further: in the northern hemisphere every thoroughbred officially ages on 1 January regardless of foaling date. If a document from another country states an age, it's worth confirming which system it uses.

What time of day does age change?
Legally, in most jurisdictions you attain a new age at the start of your birthday (in a few, such as under the traditional common-law rule, on the day before). Time of birth is ignored — a birth certificate time matters for twins' seniority, not for age.
